Wood makes strong gains on 2019 state report cards

WEST COLUMBIA, SC -- Wood Elementary showed gains in several key achievement indicators in the recent release of the state’s 2019 report cards.  Schools are rated annually in a number of areas, with a top rating of Excellent, followed by Good, Average, Below Average and Unsatisfactory.


Among the gains:


  • Wood increased its Overall score to 54 out of a possible 100, to rise to a Good rating. The score is an increase of 12 points and a rise from an Average rating on 2018’s report card.
  • Wood increased its Academic Achievement score to 15.10 out of a possible 35, with a rise in rating to meet state expectations at Average. It’s an increase of nearly 3 points and a rise from a Below Average on 2018’s report card. 
  • Wood increased its English Learners’ Proficiency score to 6.43 out of 10, to rise to a Good rating. It’s an increase of nearly 2 points and a rise from an Average rating on 2018’s report card. 
  • Wood increased its Student Progress rating to 22.74 out of a possible 35, to rise to a Good rating. It’s an increase of roughly 7 points and a rise from an Average rating on 2018’s report card. 
  • Wood increased its Student Engagement score to a 5 out of 10, to maintain its Average rating. It’s an increase of 1 point on 2018’s report card.

"Children don't care how much you know until they know how much you care,” said Principal Leonard Frierson.  “At Wood Elementary, our mission is to equip and empower our students to be productive citizens. This report card shows the commitment of our teachers and staff to this mission. 


“Our teachers and staff have focused on building strong relationships with students, and because of those strong relationships and the hard work of our teachers and our students, our school continues to move toward excellence," Frierson added.
